COLLEGE APPLICATION TIMELINE
In the school year

- • Explore different fields of study, career paths and take part in related activities.

- • Plan out tentative school list: Students will build their application based on the selected schools and continue learning about the schools. This school list will be frequently updated throughout the application process.

- • Start studying for TOEFL/IELTS, SAT/ACT, SAT 2 (if necessary), APs (if necessary).

- • Participate in extracurricular activities: In the beginning, students should join different activities to find out their strengths, limitations and penchants. Once they identify their interests, students will focus on 2-4 activities with low commitment requirements and they can spend more time on those if possible.
- • Seek out and join competitions related to their passions and/or intended career paths.
Early in the process
Summer and Fall
- • Take standardized tests such as TOEFL, SAT/ACT, SAT 2 and AP subjects.
- • Continue their extracurricular activities: In this stage, students aim for leadership positions and take on more responsibilities in the organizations/ projects.
- • Build personal profile: With Otus’s support, students build their own profile including projects that demonstrate their competencies and passions. For example:

- • Do a virtual college tour or join webinar with college admission representatives.
Building profile for college application
Spring
- • Complete a tentative school list based on majors, passions, school’s financial aid policy and family financial contribution.
- • Build a resume.
- • Learn and practice creative writing, read sample essays.
- • Brainstorming ideas for personal essays.
- • Find 2 teachers and 1 school counselor to write recommendation letters. Recommenders can also be student’s research counselor or extracurricular activity coordinator.
Summer

- – Starting from July, students start writing their personal statement and proofread the essay with their assigned Otus counselor at least 10 times. The personal statement must be finalized beginning of August.
- – Supplement essays: During the summer, students start writing why school or why major essays and finalize the template by August.

- • Build portfolio. Some examples:

– Personal website: written posts, videos and images showcasing student’s interests, passions and accomplishments.

- – Art portfolio: a variety of artworks in many forms such as photographs, oil paintings, digital arts, etc.

Prepare college application
Fall
- • Create a Common App account: When Common App opens application, students start filling out that application.
- • Send recommendation letters, school reports and all standardized scores to universities. Make sure the universities receive all these important documents.
- • Finalize their main essay (personal statement) and the template for Why school/ Why major essay by August 1
- • Complete financial aid and scholarship application: Ms. Trang will assist parents in filling out financial statements/ financial aid application.
- • By mid-October, students finish applying to Early Decision and Early Action colleges.
During college application process
November - January
- • Continue applying for Regular Decision colleges.
- • Practice interviewing with Otus counselors.
- • Track and ensure colleges receive all necessary information.
- • Submit financial aid and scholarship application.
Spring
- • Receive admission decisions by March-April.
- • Students consider and select one among accepted schools.
- • Negotiate financial aid or scholarship awards if necessary / possible.
- • In waitlist case, students continue improving their application or demonstrating continued interests to the universities.
- • Choose one school and pay the deposit by May 1.

- • Thi các bài thi chuẩn hoá như TOEFL, SAT/ACT, SAT 2 và các môn học AP.
- • Tiếp tục tham gia các hoạt động ngoại khoá: Ở giai đoạn này, học sinh sẽ hướng đến những vị trí lãnh đạo và đảm nhiệm nhiều trọng trách hơn trong các tổ chức.
- • Xây dựng hồ sơ cá nhân: Với sự hỗ trợ của Otus, học sinh sẽ xây dựng một bộ hồ sơ bao gồm những dự án thể hiện những sở trường và đam mê của mình. Ví dụ:
- – Thực tập hoặc tình nguyện tại các tổ chức phi lợi nhuận.
- – Tham gia dự án nghiên cứu khoa học.
- – Xây dựng bộ hồ sơ nghệ thuật/ trang web cá nhân.
- – Tham gia các kỳ thi học sinh giỏi thành phố/tỉnh/quốc gia.
- – Tham gia các cuộc thi viết sáng tạo, khoa học máy tính, robot, nghệ thuật, thuyết trình/tranh luận.
- • Tham quan online khuôn viên các trường đại học hoặc tham dự các buổi tư vấn tuyển sinh với các trường đại học.
Mùa xuân
- • Hoàn thiện danh sách trường dự kiến dựa trên ngành học, đam mê của bản thân, mức hỗ trợ tài chính của trường và tài chính của gia đình.
- • Xây dựng sơ yếu lý lịch (resume).
- • Học và luyện tập viết sáng tạo, đọc các bài luận mẫu.
- • Lên ý tưởng cho bài luận cá nhân.
- • Tìm 2 giáo viên và 1 cố vấn để 3 viết thư giới thiệu chính. Ngoài ra, những người có thể viết thư giới thiệu cho học sinh cũng có thể là cố vấn nghiên cứu hoặc người giám sát hoạt động ngoại khoá của các em.

- Bắt đầu từ tháng 7, học sinh sẽ bắt đầu quá trình viết bài luận cá nhân và sẽ cùng với cố vấn viên Otus chỉnh sửa bài luận ít nhất 10 lần. Bài luận cá nhân sẽ phải hoàn thành đầu tháng 8.

- • Gửi điểm thi IELTS, TOEFL, SAT, ACT và AP đến các trường.
- • Chốt bài luận chính và viết các bài luận phụ. Học sinh sẽ có thể phải viết ít nhất 10 bài luận phụ tuỳ theo yêu cầu của từng trường.
- • Hoàn thành hồ sơ tài chính và học bổng: Cố vấn viên Otus sẽ cùng phụ huynh hoàn thành mục này.
- • Giữa tháng 10, hoàn thành nộp đơn các trường có hạn nộp Early Decision và Early Action.
- Gửi các thư giới thiệu, học bạ và điểm thi các bài thi chuẩn hoá và đảm bảo các trường đã nhận được những hồ sơ này.
Tháng 11 - tháng 1
- • Tiếp tục nộp đơn cho các trường có hạn nộp thường.
- • Luyện tập phỏng vấn cùng với các cố vấn viên Otus.
- • Theo dõi và đảm bảo trường đã nhận đủ hồ sơ cần thiết.
- • Nộp hồ sơ xin hỗ trợ tài chính và học bổng.
Mùa xuân
- • Nhận kết quả tuyển sinh vào tháng 3 và tháng 4.
- • Khi có kết quả tuyển sinh, học sinh sẽ cân nhắc và chọn một trong những trường trong những trường đã trúng tuyển.
- • Cân nhắc và đàm phán gói hỗ trợ tài chính và học bổng nếu cần thiết.
- • Nếu học sinh rơi vào danh sách chờ, các em sẽ tiếp tục bổ sung hồ sơ cho các trường để thể hiện sự quan tâm đến trường.
- • Chọn 1 trường và đặt cọc trước ngày 1/5.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs)
Q: How does Otus match students with their respective counselors?
A: Before working with their assigned counselor on essays, students meet primarily with Ms. Trang to build their college application. Through the process of learning about their goals, passions, personalities, Ms. Trang will match each student with a counselor who shares similar interests and has strong experience in related fields.
Otus counselors also work with each other as a team. When a student’s counselor isn’t available at the moment or student needs guidance for other fields, other counselors can jump in to support the student. Counselors usually discuss and listen to each other’s ideas during the essay editing process to gain multiple perspectives for the essays.
Q: What roles do parents play during the college application process?
A: U.S. college application process is stressful and full of uncertainty. Parents can better support students’ mental well-being by empathizing with them and regularly encouraging them. In addition, Otus works 1-1 with parents mainly on financial statement and financial aid application. Depending on parents’ request, Otus sends parents updates on student’s application progress on a regular basis.
Q: Does Otus offer test prep services?
A: Otus does not offer test prep services but we help students keep track of their standardized test progress, give them test taking tips and recommend them trustworthy test prep services.
Q: How qualified are Otus counselors?
A: Otus counselors’ educational qualifications range from Bachelor’s to Doctorate studies at top universities in North America and they all went through the similar college application process. The counselors have strong writing skills (research papers, creative writing, personal statement, etc.) and critical thinking that can help students write better rather than just editing the essays for students. More importantly, counselors always have friendly conversations with students to learn about their interests, their ways of thinking, thus mentoring them to formulate good ideas for college essays.

Q: How much does Otus Consulting's service cost?
A: Contact us directly to learn more about the different packages we offer at this point in time. The price will vary depending on the timeframe and each student’s personalized plan.
Q: When is the most ideal time to start working with Otus?
A: Students are encouraged to work with us preferably no later than the summer before the application cycle. They could be as young as 9th graders. The earlier the better because we will have more time to help shape the student’s profile over the years and we also have a limited number of students we can take on for each application season to ensure better engaging personalized consulting experience.
Q: Which schools have accepted Otus students?
A: Otus students were accepted into Top 100 universities (ranked by U.S. News) such as Harvard University, Princeton University, University of Chicago, Pomona College, Wesleyan University, etc. and non-U.S. prestigious colleges like NYU Abu Dhabi. Yale – Nus College, Minerva Schools at KGI, etc.

Q: How can Otus help me develop my profile?
A: Our consulting service is 1-1, which means we get to fully understand your strengths, interests and goals better. With that, we help personalize your profile building strategy (how to choose extracurricular activities that suit you the best, how to improve your academic record, etc.) Otus is proud to also have a strong network of opportunities so that students can find opportunities that are most related to their interests. We connect students with mentors who will guide them step-by-step through their projects. (our alumni have obtained a patent, published a book, founded organizations, worked in the music industry, attended international conferences, etc. while they were still working with us!)
Q: Could you tell me more about the consulting process?
A: Most of the consulting sections will be done online as our counselors are located globally. Students can also come to our office in Ho Chi Minh City to work directly if counselors are available. The timeline of working with a student varies depending on their application to ensure it reaches the best quality.
Students first meet 1-1 with Ms. Trang to build their college application, then get matched with a counselor to work on their essays. Otus is flexible to assign students with any other counselor to work on other projects if necessary. Students’ essays also receive feedback from the rest of the counselor team.
Ms. Trang regularly checks in with each student’s progress. You can refer to the tentative timeline below:
- For junior class (more than 1 year before application season)
- Each student consults Ms. Trang once-twice per week with their academic performance, benchmark and strategic plans for extracurricular activities. They then make a detailed plan for their academics and suitable activities.
- Counselors mentor students with projects, extracurricular activities in the fields they have experience in. (international essay contest, founding organizations, building art portfolios, research, competitions, etc.).
2. For senior class (in the application season)
- Each student gets matched with a counselor to work 1-1 on their essays at least twice per week. Their essays will also be reviewed by Ms. Trang and other counselors.
- Ms. Trang also meets the student once per week to help them sketch out essay ideas, figure out the plan to finish other to-dos such as filling Common App, standardized test registration, editing resume, etc.
- Ms. Trang works 1-1 with parents on financial application.
- For the college interview or visa interview, students practice mock interviews with Ms. Trang and other counselors.
Q: What makes Otus special and different from other consulting firms?
A: Otus, established in 2012, is one of the first college consulting companies in Vietnam. As a close-knit community, we don’t take in a huge volume of students to ensure the consulting quality.
